DISCOVER FADDERSBØL MILL!

Egebaksandevej 1, 7700 Thisted

42.8 km

Faddersbøl Mølle is situated on the border between dune landscape and cultivated land. The mill was built in 1859 and is one of the few preserved old mills in Thy. Today, the tall white windmills dominate the landscape and exploit the wind that the area is so rich in.

Faddersbøl Mill

Right here by the river in Faddersbøl was a watermill that used the water that flowed from Sjørring Lake and south. When the drainage of Sjørring Lake was started in 1859, wide channels were dug to divert the water. The watermill became a nuisance and was dismantled. However, energy was still needed, and the mill we can visit today was built instead.

Faddersbøl Mill is a so-called Dutch mill; as the name suggests developed in the Netherlands, where the mills powered the pumps in large drainage projects. Dutch mills are designed so that the blades and cap can be rotated to follow the direction of the wind, while the mill building itself remains fixed. Large gears are used to turn the cap, while other wheels transmit power from the blades to the grinders inside the mill through an ingenious system.

In Faddersbøl Mølle the farmers of the area could have their grain ground into flour. The mill business gradually developed into a feed trade and later a grocery store, where various household goods could be purchased. Faddersbøl Mølle was closed down in 1968, by which time the technology had outlived its usefulness. For a number of years the mill building stood without its wings, clad only with panelling, but the Nature Agency and local forces took the initiative to restore the mill to its original appearance, both externally and internally.

In the basement of the mill, you can see an exhibition of boards during the summer months. Here you can read about nature and landscape, the history of the mill and its culture.

Harnessing the power of nature

The wind contains a force that can be converted into energy. The new mills generate electricity, whereas the power of the old mills was transmitted through gears directly to a grinder or a simple machine working inside the mill house. The power of nature is also harnessed in watermills, which are powered by the current in the watercourses, and we can assume that Thy had its first watermills as early as 1000 years ago.

Nature around the mill

The area around the mill is grazed to preserve the view of the mill. In the brook that passes by, you may be lucky to see otters and moorhens. Two hiking trails start from the mill, one of which leads to Ålvand Klithede. The other leads to a relatively newly planted forest, including a fenced dog park.

Faddersbøl Mølle is open every day from 1/4-19/10 from 10.00-18.00.
