In 1938, Jens Hedegaard, then owner of the field where the stone now lies, came across a stone with his plough. As this happened repeatedly, Jens Hedegaard wanted the stone dug up and removed. But it soon turned out that the stone could not be removed easily. Hilmar Ørdum, then director of the Geological Survey of Denmark, considered the stone to be one of the most interesting geological finds in a long time.
The stone is of the type "larvikit", which originates from the Larvik area in southern Norway, and came to Denmark during the Ice Age. Experts estimate that the Hundborg Stone weighs around 170 tonnes, or the equivalent of ten buses. This makes the Hundborg Stone the sixth largest in the country and the third largest in Jutland, second only to the Mørup Stone near Herning (500 tonnes) and the Dynen near Frederikshavn (270 tonnes). Denmark's largest stone is the Damestenen at Hesselager on south-east Funen. It measures 46 metres in circumference, is 10 metres high and weighs 1000 tonnes.
