Visitor Centre at the National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines

In the visitor centre you can get the latest knowledge about wind and wind power in Denmark. Here you can find out how a wind turbine is built and see different wind turbine models. You can also play with wind and wind tunnels.

Just outside the visitor centre is the observation tower. It's made from the bottom section of a Vestas wind turbine, so you can see something of a wind turbine from the inside. When you get up to the tower, you can look out over the forest and get an overview of the test centre and the test wind turbines.

Inside the forest, you can really see how big each wind turbine part actually is. We've built a 62-metre long Vestas blade out in the forest floor, which you can both look at and touch.

The Visitor Centre is open all year round, every day of the week, from 7am to 10pm. There is no service, but you can buy coffee, cold drinks, snacks and souvenirs from the vending machine. Toilets are also available.

There are tables and benches at the visitor centre, so you can eat your packed lunch while the kids play on our playground. If the weather is bad, there is also seating inside the centre

Test centre Østerild

At the test centre you can get up close to the wind technology of the future. The blades of the 7 turbines whiz right over your head, and the wind turbines, with their impressive 150-220 metres height, are up to 100 metres higher than the normal wind turbines you see in the Danish landscape.

Østerild is one of the best places to test large wind turbines in Denmark. Most importantly, the test centre is close to the coast with plenty of wind. To test the large wind turbines, an average wind speed of at least 8 metres per second at a height of 100 metres is needed.

The Østerild Test Centre has space to test nine wind turbines. In 2019, two new test stands have been added after the Government decided to expand the test centre.

With the expansion of the test centre, it has also become possible to test taller wind turbines. Before the extension, it was possible to test wind turbines up to 250 metres in height - measured from the ground to the top of the wing. After the extension, it has been possible to test offshore wind turbines up to 330 metres at 5 of the test sites
